DREAMTEAM: IPC.NET AND ROBOTICS ARE CLEARLY HEADED FOR SUCCESS

Robots have increasingly been making inroads into future production - wether it is for simple pick & place solutions, sophisticated sorting jobs or highly complex logistics tasks. The demand for robot solutions is very high at the IMA Schelling Group.
"Industrial robots are usually equipped with their own intelligent control systems wich they need for individual tasks to be performed. We do it a different way at IMA Schelling by integrating the robot in our IPC.NET plant control system. The robot gets its source and target coordinates from the intelligent control system and focuses exclusively on the workpiece handling jobs," explains Stefan Rische, plant manufacturing manager of the IMA Schelling Group. The extremely compact and flexible ´Robot.sort´sorting cells are typical example of this. They consist of a robot and a variable number of storage racks, can be scaled as desired and replace the conventional space-consuming liner storage systems.
In this process, the core know-how of the handling process, i.e. all information concerning logistics, stock management, sorting sequence, production units and intelligent stacking, is concentrated in the plant control system. This division of tasks allows even the most complex applications and also adaptations to changing processes to be quickly implemented.

ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WOOD, PLASTIC AND METAL PROCESSING REALLY AS GREAT AS MANY THINK? WE ARE GETTING RID OF PREJUDICES.

THE PLASTIC AND METAL INDUSTRIES ARE ALWAYS A STEP AHEAD OF THE WOOD INDUSTRY, SPECIFICALLY WHEN IT COMES TO TECHNICAL INNOVATIVENESS AND AUTOMATION.

These times are long gone. Meanwhile the degree of automation in the wood and furniture industry is so high that it has attracted many other jobs: engineers, programmers and many more. Of course there are still artisan jobs – particularly in the field of solid wood processing. Wood is simply a material that is too individual and special to be processed by machines alone.

IS MUCH MORE IMPRECISE AND SIMPLER THAN WORKING WITH PLASTIC OR METAL.

Wood processing is in no way inaccurate and simple. This can be easily proved using the complexity of woodworking machines. The specific and – typical of a natural product – individual characteristics of wood often make woodworking even more complicated! Natural deviations must be compensated by humans and machines, which is not the case with metal and plastic materials. Moreover wood is a material that “works” – a living material. Tempe- rature or air humidity can alter the properties of wood and may have an effect on the way it is processed. This does not make the work inaccurate. The contrary is true – the work requires a lot more precision.
